Subject: Tattoo Aftercare.

If you are a client of mine then you've heard this speech immediatly following a tattoo session with me. If you are not a client of mine and you are looking for some aftercare ideas, then these are my personal suggestions as an experienced tattoo professional for the care of freshly tattooed skin.

First off, you need to leave the bandage on for two hours.  When you take it off, clean it with warm water and soap.  Use just your hands, no washcloth, it is too rough. Blot it dry, don’t rub it.  It is an open wound, and the towel is too rough as well.

I recommend using a mild lotion, such as Curél® for sensitive skin or Gold Bond Ultimate® Soothing Chamomile Skin Therapy Lotion.  Massage it in very well, leaving no extra lotion; no white streaks.  I want you to use the lotion 5 times a day.

NO soaking, sunning or swimming for 10 days.  Showers are ok, but NO bathtubs, hottubs or swimming pools.

On the first night, I want you to cover your new tattoo with Seran Wrap, clear plastic wrap.  It will NOT stick to you, so it will actually protect you from sticking to your sheets while you sleep.  A fresh tattoo seeps a lot of plasma the first night, so don’t be surprise when you wake up and you are extremely “goopy” underneath your plastic wrap.  Just hop in the shower after you’ve removed it and clean the tattoo just like you did the first time; warm water and soap, NO washcloth… blot dry.

After the ten days, you will want to protect your tattoo with a sunblock of SPF 45 or greater.  This is especially important for the first year.  Sun damage will cause the colors to fade dramatically..

Follow these suggestions to the letter and you will increase your odds of having your tattoo heal without incident.

If you decide to get a tattoo or body piercing, make sure you go to a licensed facility and take time to discuss the safety procedures with the artists working at the shop or tattoo parlor. They should explain the process and clarify what they do to keep everyone safe and healthy by using sterile needles and razors, washing hands, wearing gloves, and keeping surfaces clean. The above are all standard practices at every Club Tattoo locations and are diligently observed by Terry "Wookie" Hoffman for each and every client he works with.

Body piercers and tattoo artists protect themselves and their clients when following safe and healthy practices, such as:

Use single-use, disposable needles and razors. Disposable piercing needles, tattoo needles, and razors are used on one person and then thrown away. Reusing needles or razors is not safe.

Safely dispose of needles and razors. Used needles and razors should be thrown away in a biohazard-labeled, disposable container to protect both the client and the person changing or handling the trash bag from getting cut.

Wash hands before and after putting on disposable gloves. Gloves are always worn while working with equipment and clients, changed when necessary, and are not reused.

Clean and sterilize reusable tools and equipment. Some tools and equipment can be reused when creating body art. Reusable tools and equipment should be cleaned and then sterilized to remove viruses and bacteria.

Frequently clean surfaces and work areas. Chairs, tables, work spaces and counters should be disinfected between procedures to protect both the health of the client and the artist.

Again, these are practices that I subscribe to. I do so not only to protect my clients but myself as well. Safety always comes first.
